ACT rejects 'draconian' anti-bikie laws

The ACT Government says it is not considering adopting tough anti-bikie laws like those in South Australia.

Police Minister Simon Corbell says last night's double murder in Chisholm was not symptomatic of a bike gang problem in Canberra.

One of those killed was a members of the Rebels Club - though it is understood the shooting was not gang related.

Mr Corbell says the Government is not going to rush into passing tough legislation.

"South Australian laws are extremely draconian, they're effectively the equivalent of anti-terrorism laws for domestic uses," he said.

"I think it is very important that we don't take a knee-jerk reaction to these issues, those laws in South Australia haven't been adopted by any other state or territory."

'Bikie oasis'

The ACT Liberals says Canberra could become an "oasis" for bikie gangs if the Government does not introduce tough new anti-bikie laws.

Opposition Police spokesman Jeremy Hanson says the Territory could become a magnet to bikie gangs if its laws are not toughened.

"The reality is that we have a pattern of behaviour across Australia so my concern is that what's being introduced into Parliament in New South Wales will make it tougher for bikies in New South Wales," he said.

"If we don't follow suit then what you'll find is that bikies will naturally gravitate towards the ACT."
